PSR
For families who have children that do not attend Catholic school. The Archdiocese asks that all Kindergarten - 10th grade children receive catechesis every year either from their Catholic School or Catholic Church Parish. PSR is designed to give a Catholic education to children who do not attend Catholic school.
We meet on 8 Mondays during the school year, typically the first Monday of the month. Children as well as at least one parent are asked to attend. Every meeting begins with a family activity before everyone breaks into into their own specific age group for further formation.
Dinner is provided for the children and free childcare is available upon request for those younger than kindergarten.
Sacramental Prep
For children who want to receive 1st reconciliation and 1st communion at SCS, and attend a different Catholic school.
The Sacramental prep program is for everyone who is receiving their 1st reconciliation and 1st communion at St. Catherine and does not go to school at SCS. Parents do not have to attend the 9 classes, but they are asked to attend the two parents meetings and the second half of each rehearsal.
PSR families do not have to register for sacramental prep because their children are automatically enrolled if they have a second grader enrolled in the PSR program.
Parents of SCS students are asked to attend the 2 parent meetings.
Confirmation
If your child is in 11th or 12th grade and wants to make their Confirmation this year, please visit our Confirmation webpage (scschurch.com/confirmation).
“Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues.” (CCC, 2223)
We have seen such a positive response and fruitfulness for our families who have participated in this program these past few years and are continuing to welcome families to participate and grow together in their faith.
We believe (and it has been proven in multiple studies) that parents have the single largest impact on their child continuing to live out their faith into adulthood. We want to equip our families with the knowledge and tools to teach the faith more intentionally in the home. This plan allows for families to grow closer to each other and to God with a good balance of classroom-setting lessons and by providing opportunities for the faith to continue within the home.
This is a shift from a weekly classroom model for children to a monthly session for parents and children at the church. At the monthly sessions, parents receive catechesis and guidance based on the monthly theme for the home lessons. This program’s unique format will draw your family together through the enthusiastic faith of your children. Its creativity and simple concepts make learning fun, as each lesson is written at an elementary level but with adult level instruction to guide and enhance your teaching. Parents do not have to be experts in the Faith, just willing to devote about an hour a week to quality family time in sharing the Faith. In the future we hope to be able to offer community building activities for children, social opportunities for families, and service opportunities in the community and at the parish. For now, however we want to focus on this time that we are being given to grow as a family.
Understanding the busy schedules of today’s families, the weekly lessons at home can be adapted to your own family schedule. The lessons will provide the backbone for your children’s spiritual formation in these formative years. This comprehensive program not only engages young children, it draws families together, and equips parents to do a first rate job in teaching the Catholic Faith to their children.
Dear Lord, with Mary and Joseph, you have lived within a family;
Teach me always to appreciate the precious gift of being part of a family.
Show me ever new ways to protect and comfort those closest to me, and
Let me, each day, do something that will say ‘I love you’ without speaking the words.
But remind me also to frequently say those words.
Let me never part from any member of my family in anger.
Prompt me always to turn back without delay – to forgive, and be forgiven.
And let me see your image within each person in my own family, and in my greater family, knowing that in your Kingdom, we will truly be one family,
United by your sacrifice on the cross.
Amen.
